    Evidence of abnormal scalar timing property in alexithymia

    : Evidence suggests that incidental modulation of affective states affects the ability to keep track of time. Alexithymia represents an ideal condition to further address the emotion-time processing link, as it refers to a trait characterized by a deficit of affective processing. 31 healthy participants completed an online version of the TAS-20 scale, which measures alexithymia, and a time reproduction task of visual stimuli related to positive (i.e., happiness) and negative (i.e., anger) facial expressions. Results documented a positive correlation between TAS-20 score and the variability in reproducing sub-second durations of the anger expression stimuli We also found an overestimation of sub-second durations of non-affective expressions in borderline/alexithymic participants. Finally, in line with the literature, we confirmed the overall tendency to overestimate the duration of anger expression stimuli. These findings, which can be interpreted in terms of abnormal scalar timing property in alexithymia, expand previous investigations linking this personality trait with abnormal processing of negative emotions. The evidence that alexithymia predicts the reproduction variability of sub-second durations of negative affective stimuli corroborates previous neuroimaging studies documenting cerebellar deficits in these individuals

    Role of HMGB1 in Cutaneous Melanoma: State of the Art

    High-mobility Group Box 1 (HMGB1) is a nuclear protein that plays a key role in acute and chronic inflammation. It has already been studied in several diseases, among them melanoma. Indeed, HMGB1 is closely associated with cell survival and proliferation and may be directly involved in tumor cell metastasis development thanks to its ability to promote cell migration. This research aims to assess the role of this molecule in the pathogenesis of human melanoma and its potential therapeutic role. The research has been conducted on the PubMed database, and the resulting articles are sorted by year of publication, showing an increasing interest in the last five years. The results showed that HMGB1 plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of skin cancer, prognosis, and therapeutical response to therapy. Traditional therapies target this molecule indirectly, but future perspectives could include the development of new target therapy against HMGB1, thus adding a new approach to the therapy, which has often shown primary and secondary resistance. This could add a new therapy arm which has to be prolonged and specific for each patient

    Disentangling the initiation from the response in joint attention: an eye-tracking study in toddlers with autism spectrum disorders

    Joint attention (JA), whose deficit is an early risk marker for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), has two dimensions: (1) responding to JA and (2) initiating JA. Eye-tracking technology has largely been used to investigate responding JA, but rarely to study initiating JA especially in young children with ASD. The aim of this study was to describe the differences in the visual patterns of toddlers with ASD and those with typical development (TD) during both responding JA and initiating JA tasks. Eye-tracking technology was used to monitor the gaze of 17 children with ASD and 15 age-matched children with TD during the presentation of short video sequences involving one responding JA and two initiating JA tasks (initiating JA-1 and initiating JA-2). Gaze accuracy, transitions and fixations were analyzed. No differences were found in the responding JA task between children with ASD and those with TD, whereas, in the initiating JA tasks, different patterns of fixation and transitions were shown between the groups. These results suggest that children with ASD and those with TD show different visual patterns when they are expected to initiate joint attention but not when they respond to joint attention. We hypothesized that differences in transitions and fixations are linked to ASD impairments in visual disengagement from face, in global scanning of the scene and in the ability to anticipate object's action

    A high-performance measurement system for simultaneous mass and resistance variation measurements on gas sensing polymer films

    Abstract This paper describes a high-performance system set-up for measurements with gas sensitive polymeric layers. The polymeric films are deposited on prototypal Quartz Crystal Microbalance sensors that allow both quartz frequency resonance variation and polymer resistance measurements. This capability adds new dimensions to the feature space allowing the improvement of the system performance. The measurement system is able to simultaneously measure the polymer resistance as well as the QCM frequency variation with high resolution (<2 /60 k and <0.1 Hz/10 MHz) and fast sampling rate (≈20 ms)

    Vitamin D and Covid-19: an update on evidence and potential therapeutic implications

    The world is now experiencing its third major epidemic of coronavirus (CoV) infections began in Wuhan, Hubei, China, in late 2019 and named COVID-19. After an initial explosive outbreak of pneumonia of unknown etiology in China, the disease spread first to neighboring Asian countries and then worldwide. Patients with COVID-19 presented with a constellation of symptoms such as fever, dry cough, dyspnea, sore throat, and nasal congestion and radiological findings showed bilateral lung glassy opacities. Vitamin D has many mechanisms by which it reduces the risk of microbial infection and death, including physical barrier, cellular natural immunity, and adaptive immunity. Vitamin D supplementation has shown favorable effects in viral infections including influenza and HIV. The effects of vitamin D supplementation during covid 19 infection remain controversial. Looking ahead, clinical studies are needed to define better cut offs for vitamin D levels and, finally, which dosage is the best

    Machine learning methodologies such as artificial neural networks (ANN), fuzzy logic or genetic programming, as well as principal component analysis (PCA) and intelligent control have been recently introduced in medicine. ANNs imitate the structure and workings of the human brain by means of mathematical models able to adapt several parameters. ANNs learn the input/output behavior of a system through a supervised or an unsupervised learning algorithm. In this work, we present and demonstrate a new pre-processing algorithm able to improve the performance of an ANN in the processing of biomedical datasets. The algorithm was tested analyzing lung function and fractional exhaled nitric oxide differences in the breath in children with allergic bronchial asthma and in normal population. Classification obtained using non linear PCA based on the new algorithm shows a better precision in separating asthmatic and control subjects
